Waterskiers! 5 reasons why you should head past Echuca to Deniliquin
The Edward River is famous for its long stretches of smooth skiing and wakeboarding waters… so what are you waiting for?
1. There’s tons more room to ski
Unlike the teeming tourist mecca Echuca, the Edward River at Deniliquin is not overcrowded with ski boats so there’s room to really manoeuvre and have fun! It's the more relaxed alternative to the hustle and bustle of a tourist destination.
There’s a dedicated ski zone, and a no-ski zone too, so boats don’t have to dodge fishermen who’ve stopped to drop a line - plus there's a second ski zone twenty minutes outside Deni at Benarca Bend ski zone which has less traffic again. Near this zone is Greg Graham Reserve with a boat ramp and toilets.
“If you’re a regular skier in Echuca,
once you’ve tried Deni,
you’d choose Deni again for your next trip.”
– a satisfied visitor
2. Getting onto the river is easy
There's excellent trailer parking and a public boat ramp at McLeans Beach, as well as access for boats at both Sloane Street and Harfleur Street. Plus there’s private access to the river at Deniliquin Boat Club and BIG4 Deniliquin Holiday Park. Find the public boat ramps here.
3. Learning to ski is good fun in Deni!
The Edward River doesn’t have the same fast current as the Murray, so if you are teaching a young child to ski, you won’t need to worry about the current whisking them away downstream.
November until April, you can join in the family fun with the community at Deniliquin Boat Club’s afternoon ski schools. The club runs $3 ski sessions Fridays 5-8pm and $5 advanced ski sessions Wednesdays from 5-8.30pm. Each ski is about 10 minutes, and all the equipment needed is provided by the club. Kids and adults can learn in baby steps using a sea horse to help learn to stand. There's also a barbeque and pool and tons of kids around to play with. If you'd like to try a single ski, trick skis or wakeboarding, you can download the boat club's app to pick a time slot on Wednesday afternoon.
4. Stay a night for free
Until the end of May, if you stay 3 nights, one of them is on the house at nine Deni accommodations, from holiday parks to motels, including Australia's best holiday park: Big4 Deni has won best holiday park in Australia for three years running and is now in the Australian Tourism Award’s Hall of Fame – a feat no other holiday park has ever done before! If you stay at Big4 Deniliquin, you can test your skills on their free slalom course – a serious challenge even for skilled skiers.
(The course is open at selected times and dependent on river activity, so call 1800 227 217 before planning your visit.)
5. There’s tons of other fun in Deni - on the river and off
From fishing to beach to beach tube floating down the river to bike rides through the forest (including bike hire) to great places to eat, Deni really is a place to connect with family, friends and nature.
So, there’s no excuse – get out here and get into that adrenaline rush!
Deni is just 285km from Melbourne (80km past Echuca) – an easy drive. It’s a great untapped family riverside holiday destination. Come and give it a try!
